Are the words you are using repelling prospects for your business and potential customers?


A few years ago I was doing a training in Orlando Florida for a company I had a 10 city training contract with. They did an opportunity meeting in the morning and I was doing my “How to Create Leads for your Products & Opportunity” workshop in the afternoon.

The morning session was getting ready to start. I always liked to sit in on these even though I obviously didn’t participate as a speaker.

When I walked into the room a lady came up to me that I had met at previous events. She had reached a mid-level leadership position in the company. She walked up to me with a big smile on her face and said…

“Dale, I want you to meet my prospect” pointing to a young lady who had walked up behind her.


I stuck out my hand and said, “Hi, my name is Dale. I will be speaking later on today. Welcome. I am glad you are here.”

Let me ask you a question. Do you see anything wrong with this statement: “Dale, I want you to meet my prospect.”

Stop for a minute and think about that statement. Put yourself in the shoes of the young lady.

Wouldn’t it have been better if she had called the young lady her “guest” instead of her “prospect”?

Would you rather be considered a prospect or a guest?

Terminology makes the difference ladies and gentleman. We have to remember our business is different on the INSIDE looking out than it is on the OUTSIDE looking in.

The more we can treat people like we want to be treated and get away from industry slang the better we will be able to communicate the message about our opportunities and prospects.

Terminology does make the difference, especially when you initially contact those you know about your products and opportunity. One of the biggest mistakes newbies make when they join a network marketing organization is they turn into “Sally salesperson.” This business model is about leadership, it is not about sales or closing! You are simply looking for the right people at the right time in their life!
